Halloween hazards for your pet
October 28, 2009
Halloween can be a scary and dangerous time for the four-legged members of your family. Here are some important facts about this Holiday.

1) Candy can be deadly! Keep all candy, especially chocolate, up and away from pets. Sugar-free candy, especially gum, contains an ingredient called Xylitol that can be deadly with just one piece. If you suspect your pet may have eaten sugar-free candy or gum it is important to see a Veterinarian immediately! Animals can become very ill within an hour of ingestion and death can occur if treatment does not start fast enough.

2) There are some important rules to remember when dressing up your furry friends. Many pets actually become stressed when dressed in costumes and can become aggressive or frightened. Make sure the costume does not impair vision (such as masks and hats) and it does not restrict breathing.

3) Refrain from letting your pet be a part of trick-or-treating festivities. many dogs are frightened by costumes, loud noises, and children running and screaming. Do not let your dog come to the door when you answer it for trick-or-treaters. It is best to keep your pet confined to another room with an activity they can enjoy such as treats or toys.

4) Black cats often become the victims of pranks on Halloween night. Keep your black cat inside for the week proceeding Halloween and that night to prevent any cruelty to your pet.

We want all members of the family to have a safe and happy Holiday!
