Roswell man arrested in federal coke sting
|
October 26, 2009 ATLANTA — Federal authorities announced Oct. 16 that a 24-year-old Roswell man was among four arraigned by a U.S. magistrate judge on felony charges related to cocaine that had been couriered by flight from Texas to a Peachtree City airport.
According to the Department of Justice, that suspect, Jorge Olivio, was also charged with possessing a weapon in furtherance of a drug trafficking Crime and with being a felon unlawfully in possession of a firearm. The other men involved are all from Texas.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, on Aug. 29 ICE agents received information regarding a Texas plane bound for Falcon Field airport in Peachtree City. Agents said they saw three Texans unload six bags from the Cessna aircraft. Two of the men were dropped off at a Best Western hotel with those six bags.
About an hour later, Olivio allegedly drove to the hotel and helped one of the Texans load the bags into another car. As Olivio drove off, Peachtree City police attempted to stop him and he fled. After a lengthy chase, Olivio was caught. He had 173 kilograms of cocaine in the car, said police.
Olivio and the other three men were indicted on Oct. 7.
"This case demonstrates that even the quiet suburbs of Atlanta can be directly impacted by the illicit business conducted by Mexican-based criminal organizations," said Kenneth A. Smith, Special Agent in Charge of the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Office of Investigations in Atlanta.
