Milton to plants first official Christmas Tree Saturday

Milton - The City of Milton will plant its first official Christmas tree, a massive Deodar Cedar, on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 10 a.m. at the intersection of Webb Road and Highway 9. The public is invited to attend the event, and several school groups with an interest in environmental education will be on hand to watch as the massive tree takes its new home.
"The planting of this majestic tree creates a lasting monument to our city's love of trees and the environment, and is made possible through the generosity and caring of citizen volunteers and supporting businesses," says Mayor Joe Lockwood. "Years from now, Milton citizens will gather at this tree to celebrate our community and the beginning of the holiday season in Milton." Lockwood adds, "This beautiful cedar will stand as a lasting reminder of our city's beauty during the holidays and beyond, and will create a legacy for future generations to remember and enjoy."
Donated by Protect Milton, Inc., the stately conifer grew to its current height of 22 feet at Moon's Tree Farm in Loganville, Ga. The 3700 pound cedar was discovered by Skinner's Nursery, who also volunteered to transport the tree to its home in Milton. Landscapers from The Roland Group will oversee planting of the grand tree and will prepare the site and dig the hole for the massive roots in the days preceding the planting ceremony. Deodar Cedar trees are known for their beautiful pyramidal shape and soft blue to gray/green needles on softly drooping branches.
The gentle giants can grow as large as 50 feet high and 30 feet wide.
The city's Christmas tree will come alive in lights at a tree lighting ceremony planned for the start of the upcoming holiday season. Details will be posted on the city website as they become available.

With a 40 percent chance of rain forecast for Saturday, a rain-out date is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 25 at 2 p.m. in case of hard or steady rain on Saturday.
