Cash for Candy: Patel takes stand against sweets this Halloween
October 20, 2009
Forsyth County - One area dentist is redefining the phrase "put your money where your mouth is."

This Halloween, trick-or treaters can bring their excess candy to Family and Cosmetic Dental Care in Suwanee and receive $1 per pound. Dr. Mitul Patel is leading this anti-decay movement by giving away dollars and glowing electric toothbrushes in exchange for cavity – provoking candy.

"Ditch the candy. Visiting your dentist twice a year and brushing daily are great preventative measures, but doing away with excess sweets altogether would really give your teeth a healthy boost," said Patel from Family and Cosmetic Dental Care. "Kids can still have all of the fun of trick-or-treating, and now their piggy banks will benefit as well. Plus these glowing toothbrushes we're giving out are really cool-they're like light sabers for your mouth."

Global sugar consumption for kids increases by about 2 percent annually and currently sits at 50 million tons per year, which means parents need to be sure their kid's teeth and being are cared for more than ever. Candy can lead to hyperactivity, weight gain and in addition can hurt children's teeth. In some cases, the wrong types of candy can also lead to broken teeth and damage braces.

Candy will be collected at Family and Cosmetic Dental Care Monday, Nov. 2 only from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The candy must be unopened. Please no bites. It will then be shipped to troops overseas.

Patel is the sole dentist in Family and Cosmetic Dental Care in Suwanee, which emphasizes dentistry for all ages. Patel is available to provide more information at 770-888-3384, or visit online at www.MyJohnsCreekDentist.com.
