Youth crashes car, found at hospital
|
October 20, 2009 Forsyth deputies charged a 20-year-old Dawsonville man Oct. 10 with a host of charges after he allegedly left his crashed car on the side of Gilbert Road in Cumming.
Firefighters and police searched for the suspect, Timothy A. Gibbs, after the accident, because first responders had seen him allegedly leave the scene and walk into a nearby barn around 8 p.m.
He was later found at Northside Hospital-Forsyth, where he went to receive treatment for injuries allegedly sustained in the accident.
The deputy who charged Gibbs said when the two met in his hospital room, he had a "strange smile on his face" and said "I know why you are here."
When asked why he left the scene of the crash, Gibbs reportedly laughed and responded, "Wouldn't you? I had a few shots. Wouldn't you leave if you'd been drinking?"
And what happened in the 3½ hours since the crash and when he went to the hospital? Here are Gibbs words, taken directly from the report: "Oh, I hung out in the woods until you guys stopped looking for me. I figured you would come back later, so I stayed there for a while. Then I went to my uncle's house, smoked a few cigarettes and drank a Coca-Cola."
After a while, family members convinced Gibbs to go to the hospital and turn himself in.
He was charged with underage consumption of alcohol, failure to maintain lane, failure to report an accident and operating a motor vehicle with slick tires.
