September 16, 2009 Air Force Cadet Molly S. Engle has entered Basic Cadet Training at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., in preparation to enter the first academic year at the academy. The six-week, two-phased orientation program must be successfully completed by the cadets prior to entering their freshman year. The training prepares men and women to meet the rigorous mental and physical challenges experienced by new cadets. She is the daughter of Philip and Maureen Engle of Roswell. Engle is a 2009 graduate of Roswell High School.
Air Force Cadet Chloe E. Babcock has entered Basic Cadet Training at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo., in preparation to enter the first academic year at the academy. She is the former ward of Quinton Ward of Buford. Babcock is a 2009 graduate of North Gwinnett High School in Suwanee.
Airman Candace P. Baker graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. She completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. She is the daughter of Renee Woodall of Buford and Howard Baker of Cumming. Baker is a 2007 graduate of Millcreek High School in Hoschton.
Navy Seaman Abram J. Granitz, brother of Gabe E. Granitz of Duluth, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Granitz completed a variety of training, which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. Granitz is a 2007 graduate of Roseau High School of Roseau, Minn.
Airforce cadet Donald B. Jackson has entered Basic Cadet Training at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., in preparation to enter the first academic year at the academy. He is the son of Donald and Sharon Jackson of Duluth. Jackson is a 2009 graduate of South Forsyth High School.
Vincent P. Higgins IV has entered Basic Cadet Training at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., in preparation to enter the first academic year at the academy. He is the son of Vincent and Linda Higgins of Roswell. Higgins is a 2009 graduate of Lassiter High School in Marietta.
Cody R. Getz has entered Basic Cadet Training at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., in preparation to enter the first academic year at the academy. He is the son of Delano and Dolores Getz of Buford. Getz is a 2009 graduate of Buford High School.
Devin T. Durden has entered Basic Cadet Training at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., in preparation to enter the first academic year at the academy. He is the son of Timothy and Mary Durden of Buford. Durden is a 2009 graduate of Buford High School.
Army Staff Sgt. Barkett W. Manning has been mobilized and activated for deployment overseas to a forward operating base in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Operation Iraqi Freedom is the official name given to military operations involving members of the U.S. armed forces and coalition forces participating in efforts to free and secure Iraq. Manning, a psychological operations specialist/team chief, is normally assigned to the 310th Psychological Operations Company, Fort Gillem, Buford. He has 10 years of military service. He is the son of Barkett P. Manning of Buford. His wife, Jessica, is the daughter of John and Ann V. Burns of Suwanee. The staff sergeant is a 1993 graduate of North Gwinnett High School in Suwanee.
Marine Corps Pvt. Christon E. Miller, daughter of Shernae E. Miller Adderley of Alpharetta, recently completed 12 weeks of basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. designed to challenge new Marine recruits both physically and mentally. Miller and fellow recruits ended the training phase with The Crucible, a 54-hour, team evolution culminating in an emotional ceremony in which recruits are presented the Marine Corps Emblem, and addressed as "Marines" for the first time in their careers.
