August 21, 2009 HYA, city, board agree to play ball
It appears baseball will go on without much of a hitch at Bell Memorial Park.
At their Aug. 17 meeting, City Council approved an amendment to the Facility Use Agreement for the Hopewell Youth Association's (HYA) travel team use of the park.
The issue dates back to June 20, when the city's Parks and Recreation Advisory Board recommended the city not renew its August 2008 travel baseball contract with HYA.
The reason, said the board, was that increasing numbers of recreational players would be squeezed out of limited field space by travel baseball teams.
HYA parents and board members were incensed and said the 15-year-old non-profit had no problem scheduling fields. Representatives from both sides were ordered to go back to the drawing board and come up with a contract that accommodates everyone.
Under the new amendment, Milton will be a part of HYA's registration process, which will give the city a look at enrollment numbers. It will have until Feb. 15 to review those numbers to see if there is an increased demand for recreational baseball.
If the numbers are too great and additional field space must be used, HYA will find a place for its travel teams to play, said City Manager Chris Lagerbloom. The contract lasts until July 2010.
Both the HYA and city Parks and Recreation Board were pleased with the agreement.
"I am very happy and confident," said Scott Stachowski, vice president of HYA.
Milton gets $500K in Safe Routes grants
At its meeting Aug. 17, Milton's City Council approved an agreement between the state Department of Transportation and the county Board of Education for $500,000 worth of projects as part of the Georgia Safe Routes to School Projects grant.
Milton has 11 projects meant to improve bike and pedestrian connectivity at its schools. It will pay no money for the improvements — the money is all from the state.
The improvements will take place at Crabapple Crossing Elementary, Northwestern Middle and Summit Hill Elementary schools and include filling in sidewalk gaps, installing new sections of sidewalk/trail to provide connections to schools, school zone signage, crosswalk improvements and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) improvements to sidewalks at schools.
Principal Engineer said Carter Lucas work could start prior to or during the next school year.
