Forsyth County Schools discuss future Kelly Mill Elementary

August 16, 2009
Forsyth County – Kelly Mill Elementary School had been tentatively scheduled to open in 2011. Now, officials from Forsyth County Schools are discussing whether or not this should happen.

The Forsyth County Board of Education discussed the viability and necessity of constructing the elementary school during an Aug. 13 work session.

Some initial steps have already been taken regarding the construction of a new school. A total of 25 general contractors pre-qualified to propose for the construction and 15 general contractors submitted proposals.

The estimated total cost of construction is $16,302,575.55. After state reimbursement, local funds of $8,358,527.55 will be required.

Director of Facilities Robert Sewell said opening Kelly Mill would help reduce 28 trailers from four other schools. But Forsyth County Board of Education Boardmember Mike Dudgeon said the schools that would feed into Kelly Mill have not seen the growth they have in the past and described the projected numbers as "too aggressive."

"I'm concerned there is a slowing down in the growth," he said. "Yeah, we could get rid of some trailers, but we could redistrict if that is that important or we could put it off a year."

Dudgeon said the school system should consider improving older facilities and "do smaller projects" rather than constructing a new school."

Boardmember Tom Cleveland said they need to "look at where the growth will happen when it happens."

"We've been told the county has the inventory," he said. "We need to look at where the growth is going to happen. We need to look in what areas and where."

Board chairwoman Ann Crow said the school system needs more information before making a decision.

A discussion of Kelly Mill Elementary is scheduled for the Aug. 20 regular Board of Education meeting at 6 p.m. at the Forsyth County Board of Education and Professional Development Center located at 1120 Dahlonega Highway in Cumming. For more information, visit www.forsyth.k12.ga.us.
