JOHNS CREEK - About 1,100 students will walk through the doors of the newly constructed Johns Creek High School Aug. 10. After a couple years of construction, the 321,000 square-foot building will swing open its doors for students, faculty and the community.

JCHS Principal Buck Greene said he's looking forward to the school year.

"I'm ready for students to be in this building and make it a school," he said. "We know that we having a beautiful building, but it's not truly a school until the students, parents and staff all get involved."

Construction workers were putting the finishing touches on the school located on State Bridge Road throughout the summer.

JCHS includes a 321,000 square-foot building, 96 classrooms and labs, a dozen science labs, seven career technology labs, a fine arts computer lab, a photography darkroom and an outdoor patio.

There will be 505 ninth-graders, 370 sophomores, 170 juniors and 70 seniors enrolled in the 2009-2010 school year. Greene said the Fulton County Board of Education gave students the choice to attend the new school or remain at their current school.

More than 100 faculty members and staff have been preparing for the new school year. Greene said teachers from all over North Fulton have been brought on board at JCHS, including instructors from nearby Chattahoochee and Northview high schools, among others.

"My goals for this year include having a safe building, a smooth-running, operational school with procedures in place," said Greene. "Everyone will know their duties. We know we'll have fantastic teachers, students and faculty. It will be a well-oiled machine."
