Suspect: 'I was going to go until I died'

June 29, 2009 Milton police arrested a 20-year-old man June 16 for a number of charges after he allegedly ran from an officer on Birmingham Highway in an apparent attempt to kill himself.
Miraculously, the suspect survived crashing his Ford Explorer into a stone mailbox on Red Maple Lane, disabling his vehicle and pinning him inside.
According to the incident report, a Milton police officer was finishing paperwork in his cruiser on Birmingham Highway shortly before 3:30 a.m. when he heard loud music coming from a nearby car.
That car, the Explorer, sped by at what he estimated was 80 mph, he said.
The officer began following the truck, at which point the driver shut off its lights and abruptly turned onto Red Maple Lane.
The officer knew the road was a dead end, so he thought the driver might jump out of the car.
Instead, he whipped back around and headed for the cruiser, nearly hitting it.
The driver didn't make it far, though. He crashed into the mailbox just a few houses down, and the officer was able to arrest him without further incident.
After pulling the suspect, who smelled of alcohol, from the demolished truck, the officer began talking with driver.
In his report, the officer detailed the young man told him, "that he didn't care if he lived or died and said that he wanted to kill himself anyway."
The reason, he said, was that "he had been arrested for DUI twice and once for minor in possession [of alcohol] over the last three months."
He added, "I was going to go until I died."
The suspect was taken to Alpharetta Jail.
