Roswell gets $825K energy grant
|
June 25, 2009 As the Boy Scouts say, "Be Prepared."
Roswell was, and now it will be the recipient of an $825,000 grant to give aging government buildings an energy makeover.
It is called an Energy Conservation Block Grant, and the amount is based on census population data. All any city needs to do is apply to receive it. There are no matching funds from the city.
But to get the grant, each city must present a plan detailing the projects to which the funding will go.
That is where Roswell was ahead of the game. Last year it prepared an energy assessment of city facilities.
"Our timing was indeed fortunate," said City Administrator Kay Love. "It was like a perfect storm of events in which we had exactly the right document in hand to apply for this grant. If you do not have a strategy for using the Block Grant prepared, the government is providing a 120-day grace period to come up with one. We won't have to wait."
The city is participating in the Atlanta Regional Commission's Green Cities Program, and that facilities report was part of that participation, Love said.
"One way to become a Green Community is to cut down on energy costs. It not only helps the taxpayers, but is better for the environment. There is no competitive bid for this, we just have to justify our spending," she said.
The city's facilities study has identified more corrective work than the grant will cover. Officials have not determined yet just which buildings will get priority.
