Rowers capture awards at indoor event

April 23, 2009 For the second consecutive year, the Atlanta Junior Rowing Association (AJRA) captured the Team Points award for the most points for a juniors club participating at the Georgia Tech ERG Sprints, an indoor race of 2000 meters on rowing machines.
In the Junior Women's event, AJRA placed 14 rowers in the top 20, with Madi Shields, a senior at Northview High School, and Maggie Schaefer, a junior at Walton, earning gold and silver, respectively. In the Junior Men's event, 12 AJRA rowers were in the top 20 as Shawn Connell, a senior at Roswell High, took the silver.
Two AJRA rowers – Allison Dow, a junior at Northview, and Savannah Ranck, a Northview freshman – placed in the top 10 of the Junior Novice Women's event.
In the Junior Novice Men's event, AJRA placed four rowers in the top 10 – Garrett Lobaugh, sophomore, Milton; Sean Olliffe, freshman, Roswell; Mitchell Lavallee, freshman, Eaton Academy; and Zach Smarr, freshman, Pope.
Summer Cook, sophomore, Roswell, and Marli Goro, junior, Lassiter, took gold and silver, respectively, in the Junior Women's Coxswains event. In the Junior Men's Coxswains event, Chris Cote, a junior at St. Francis, and Mitchell Miller, sophomore, of North Springs, earned gold and bronze, respectively. Cote won a Golden Hammer by setting a new record in his event.
AJRA Coaches Ty Tucker and Bryce Carlson placed first and second in the Junior Coaches Dash with Tucker receiving a Golden Hammer in recognition of a record-setting time in the event. Coach Anna Debban won the women's portion of the Junior Coaches Dash for the second consecutive year, and Coach Julie McQueen placed third. AJRA also captured first and third in the Junior Team Relay event. Each summer, AJRA offers instructional "Learn to Row" camps for more than 200 co-eds aged 12-18.
