Ballroom Dance champions boogie in Johns Creek
|
March 03, 2009 Warren and Pat Tuttle's story reads like something straight from a fairy tale. They met at a New Year's Eve Ballroom Dance Party and that night turned their lives into a dance of their very own.
Finding they had much in common, they began dancing together socially for the next three years.
Ballroom dancing had taken hold of the couple's life, so it was no surprise when the Tuttles started their first Ballroom Dance Community at Perimeter Church in Johns Creek.
"It was in January of 2005 and we had about six beginner couples," Don said.
The Tuttles married around Valentine's Day and then they shared their wedding with friends in a unique way.
"Our first practice party was our wedding reception in February," said Don.
The couple are members of Perimeter Church where Warren is the Director of Ballroom Dance for the Perimeter Academy of the Arts. Their vision for a dance community is to provide an atmosphere of fun and acceptance for the average person or couple, and to minister to those in the dance community. But the Tuttles and the Ballroom Dance Community minister to others as well.
Each year the Ballroom Community regularly holds Fundraiser Ballroom Dances that raise thousands of dollars for projects like Happy Club (adults with developmental disabilities), missions, Katrina Relief, Good Samaritan Health Center, and the Norcross Co-op.
They also host community projects like Unite/Compassion in Action at the Willis House (group home for adults with developmental disabilities), Happy Club events, and dinner and dancing socials.
The Ballroom Dance is open to singles and married couples.
Don and Karen Edmiston started dancing with the very first ballroom class at Perimeter Church as a way to better their skills for their daughter's upcoming wedding.
They enjoyed dancing so much they are now taking advanced classes and have even danced in some local performances. Last year the Edmistons and five other Perimeter Ballroom couples performed the Viennese Waltz in The Perimeter Academy of the Arts Ballet Company's classical ballet, "Cinderella."
This year, the Edmistons and three other couples will perform again in The Perimeter Ballet Company's production of "Sleeping Beauty," March 13-15.
The Tuttles also compete on a national level in several different dance styles.
