Icy bridges, overpasses make driving dangerous in Georgia
|
February 28, 2009 Icy bridges, overpasses and black ice will make driving during the overnight hours dangerous, the Ga. Department of Transportation(GDOT) warned motorists in the middle and northern portions of the state are expected to experience icing throughout the overnight hours. Also, black ice is likely to develop on sections of roadways.
Numerous instances of snow-laden trees falling across roadways have been reported.
The public is strongly urged to refrain from all but emergency or absolutely necessary travel until after sunrise, Monday.
Nearly 1,000 GDOT employees utilizing more than 200 pieces of equipment will be treating road and bridge surfaces throughout the night. As temperatures fall, however, sections refreeze quickly and difficult-to-detect black ice can develop. For those who must drive, extreme caution is urged.
Monday morning commuters are requested to, if possible, delay driving to work until well after sunrise to provide themselves better visibility of road conditions.
GDOT is in constant consultation with the National Weather Service; additional advisories will be issued throughout the night as conditions warrant.
