Alpharetta council bickers over Obama's stimulus bill
February 10, 2009
Tempers flared at Alpharetta City Council's workshop Monday night over what Councilman John Monson called the "so-called economic stimulus bill" the U. S. Senate passed this week.

Monson said since President Barack Obama first announced he would have an economic stimulus package last fall, the definition of economic stimulus has changed.

"It is morphing into a government spending bill more massive than anything this country has seen before," he said.

President Obama and the Democrats are mortgaging the future of their children and grandchildren, Monson said.

Monson said he would prefer that the city have no part in this plan.

He made his remarks after he saw published reports that Alpharetta had submitted a list of potential projects worth an estimated $61 million at the request of the Ga. Department of Transportation, the Atlanta Regional Commission and the Conference of Mayors.

Mayor Arthur Letchas said he thought City Council was a non-partisan body, but if somebody is going to get the money, Alpharetta should at least ask for a share. The city received $4.8 million in federal funds for Westside Parkway, he said, asking if that meant they should give that money back.

Monson and fellow Council members David Belle Isle and Doug DeRito differed with the mayor, saying those funds were part of the federal budget.

Belle Isle said whenever a city asks for money, they are implicit in the misuse of the money.

He likened the city asking for these funds to the city of Atlanta, GM, Chrysler and banks asking for bailouts.

"I don't see it that way," Letchas said.

DeRito said he could not remember council ever discussing the project lists until he saw it on the news, to which Letchas replied he was right.

Submitting the project lists wasn't a problem for DeRito, though he had an issue with not discussing what went on them. But he was against going forward on the stimulus plan, because it makes the city "implicit in a process that frankly is completely against everything I believe as an American.

"We are at risk as a country of becoming a socialized nation." DeRito said.

The very same people pushing this bill are implicit in driving the country to its current economic state, he said.

"This is a very dangerous bill, and that's why I am opposed to this, us submitting anything under the guise of a so-called stimulus package we all know is a farce," DeRito said.

"This didn't work in the Great Depression. We should learn from that," he said.

Letchas said council better hope that with the current state of the economy, this stimulus plan succeeds even though it came from a Democratic president and Congress.

"You'd better hope for our children's sake and our grandchildren's sake that this plan does work," he said. "Do I think we are going to get any money out of this? No."

But if the city is offered any money, council members will have the opportunity to vote against receiving it, said staff.

MainStreet Economic Recovery

The U.S. Conference of Mayors asked Alpharetta and the rest of its member cities to submit a list of metro projects each city felt would be a stimulus to the local economy and immediately create jobs. Alpharetta apparently was the only North Fulton city to submit a list, with only Johns Creek and Roswell as fellow members of the organization. A total of 779 U.S. cities provided project lists.

Alpharetta's project list included:

$18.2M Webb Bridge Park Community Center

$8.6M Wills Park Pool Renovation

$7M Community Center Phase III (at Wills Park)

$4.6M 125 police vehicles; 9 fire vehicles

$1.1M Indoor shooting range

$19.2M Transportation, including road improvements on most major streets and connectors and traffic control equipment

City of Alpharetta Council have no clue
February 17, 2009 | 07:07 PM

Does it matter what the local council has to say about this bill , no. What matters is for years they have been told by their own staff and outside money people " stop rolling the millage rate back". It will only burn you later on. But no they wanted to look like they are trying to save the tax payer some money. Get real . You did it to protect your own political careers. Your own in house finance director told you to keep the rate the same, but no. So what the citizens pays more taxes based on his property value going up. Get it property value goes up so does taxes. Duh ...how many people actually have a problem with that. Gee my house is worth more so my taxes go up. What we have now is my house is worth more than I bought it ( even in a down market)and my taxes went down, well great but the services I expect have now gone down. Why because the mayor( please just retire already..its not Mayberry anymore dude) and council who all could not tell you one thing about what really goes on in the city tried to save you a few buscks. Well now your fire and police response is slow, your public works projects are on hold and your little t ball park is closed. Gee thanks for saving me 50 bucks on my propert taxes last year. Thats ok Atlanta did the same thing ...roll the millage rate back.. a few years ago and now look....nice job. Take the money becuase if you don't some other city will and then it will be Johns Creek or Milton as the place to live not Alpharetta...remember Roswell was the city of North Fulton ..now its nothing but a place with crime and ......way to go 2 south main street.

Responsable Government Officials

I am glad to hear that we do have some governmental leaders with some sense. We are all suffering with this situation and is the job of the Government to make responsable decissions. Not count on Federal money that does not exsist in the first place. 125 police cars would replace all of those new police cars that I see driving around. What will happen to those vehicles? That is a great example of mismanagement of funds. Which is what got us in this situation in the first place.

And what exactly did George W do?
February 14, 2009 | 12:46 PM

No regulations on anything, just spend, spend, spend, and borrow, borrow, borrow. Just like the ignorant people that maxed out their credit cards and bought houseswith variable interest rates, full well knowing that they couldn't afford them But, that was the norm in the past; spend and borrow, spend and borrow.

Another part of the problem

125 new police cars!!! Pool renovations, community centers, Westside Parkway? There is no difference between this and the banks asking for more money just to pay for trips and BONUSES! Someone get it right>Maybe we should ask for money for marshlands like Polisa or High speed rails from LA to Las Vegas.

I agree with Johns of Cumming
February 13, 2009 | 11:52 PM

It is a disgrace for the Alpharetta city council to be bickering about this issue. Has anyone noticed what horrible shape our economy is in right now? They should have been bickering when George W was in office for the past 8 years, not now.

Porkulus Bill
February 13, 2009 | 01:07 PM

To: Johns, Cumming

So Johns, cumming….. $58.7 Million to Alpharetta. Now…in your infinite wisdom…please tell me/us how many JOBS this is going to create or save? How many home owners is this going to save in Alpharetta…you know, the homeowners that got in over their heads trying to live beyond their means? A FEW to say the least. This ISN'T an effort to save ANYTHING. It's just an effort to put forth 25 years of legislation that the Democrats have tried and failed to get enacted.

$2 Billion for ACORN.....that won't create jobs, just fraudulent votes for the next election.

$48 Million for ATV trails.

$8 BILLION to construct high-speed rail lines… between Los Angeles-to-Las Vegas rail will get a big chunk of the money…. Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., has tried to get this for several years. $8BILLION to create MAYBE 1,000 jobs….lol

$88.6 MILLION for new construction for Milwaukee Public Schools…..FYI… MILWAUKEE CURRENTLY HAS 15 VACANT SCHOOLS and, quite logically, no plans for new construction.

$30 MILLION for Pelosi's San Francisco Bay Area to protect, among other things, the endangered salt marsh harvest mouse.

Etc....etc....etc......

Obama stood in front of the American people this week and said that there is "NO PORK in this bill"..... There are "NO EARMARKS".... and you drank every last drop of that Kool Aid didn't you?

Bottom line, it seems you're the "lemming" that listens like a sheep to the DailyKo's and MoveOn for your guidance.

I'm PROUD of the council members that stood up and questioned this porkulus bill and the money that MY CITY can receive from it.

Since I live in Alpharetta.....come election time, I'm campaigning for them!

Monson, Belle Isle, DeRito ranting ill timed and not in citizens
February 13, 2009 | 07:25 AM

Their railing about the deficit their children will have to face is ill-timed. Where were they when this deficit was being incurred over the last 8 years. Mr Belle Isle campaigned in my neighborhood an personally came to my home seeking my vote. His position was to improve traffic flow in Alpharetta and Webb Bridge Park improvements without raising my taxes. Did he get amnesia or just read the "daily republican party email".

The national deficit these gentlemen complain about didn't just show up. I didn't hear any of them complain about the "bank bailout". What's your agenda, guys? Helping the citizens of Alpharetta or another right wing wild goose chase by the party out of power?

Saving Jobs
February 12, 2009 | 07:27 PM

"Johns",

Can you give a compelling reason why we need to borrow money from China and pay interest for the next 30 years to buy police cars for Alpharetta?

Do you really think 30-year financing for a vehicle is a good idea under ANY circumstances?

Disappointing Councilmen
February 12, 2009 | 06:56 PM

Hearing these public figures trash the efforts being made to basically save jobs, careers, homeownership, and avoid a complete meltdown of the economy is at best disappointing. At worst they are lemmings who listen to conservative radio shows for their guidance.

Monson, Belle Isle, DeRito Get It Right
February 12, 2009 | 01:49 PM

Kudos to Alpharetta Councilmen John Monson, David Belle Isle and Doug DeRito for taking a principled stand against the city's request for federal stimulus dollars for highly local projects.

I can understand some federal funding for roads and highways. Roads are a "collective" expense in many regards. But to dig at the federal trough for local projects like a shooting range and community center just makes us part of the $11,000,000,000,000+ debt problem that will be an albatross for generations to come.

Unfortunately Monson, Belle Isle and DeRito have little influence beyond the Alpharetta city limits. Perhaps Tom Price, Johnny Isakson and Saxby Chambliss could learn a few things at Alpharetta City Hall on a Monday night. Come to think of it, maybe the six of them should trade places.
