Milton students attend N.Y. literature conference

March 26, 2007
Milton High School's literary magazine and yearbook staff traveled to Columbia University in New York last week for the 83rd annual Columbia Scholastic Press Association conference.

The magazine sent 17 of its staff to attend four seminars a day for five days. The seminars took place in Columbia University classrooms. The instructors included high school and college professors, journalists from the Washington Post and New York Times, as well as authors of several books.

During the seminars students learned different techniques to improve the quality of their publications. Each instructor specialized in a different aspect of journalism. Graphics, layout, content, and fundraising were just some of the subjects that students were able to choose from to attend.

After seminars students were also able to experience New York culturally. Class sponsor Richard Williams created a schedule that included Madam Tussaude's Wax Museum, Chinatown, Little Italy, Ground Zero, St. Patrick's Day Parade, Times Square, a viewing of the play "Wicked" at Gershwin theatre and travel to Grand Central Station. Students were also able to dine in elegance at the world renowned Sardi's restaurant.
