Roswell OKs traffic calming methods

Neighborhoods to buy devices

March 12, 2014
ROSWELL, Ga. For those who lament speeding on local streets, Roswell Transportation has a solution.

Homeowners' associations (HOAs) will now have the option of buying traffic calming devices to keep traffic from speeding on their streets, said Transportation Director Steve Acenbrak.

"Some of the HOAs that we deal with have asked for a streamlined process where they can address some of their areas themselves," Acenbrak said. "They want some control over what they can do."

That control can come in three forms under a new policy from Roswell. HOAs will have the option of using yellow pedestrian crossing markers, a radar-using speed sign or a rapidly-flashing rectangular beacon.

"We have found that these three methods work extremely well at traffic calming," Acenbrak said.

He said HOAs were frequently coming to Roswell DOT asking for methods to slow traffic on their roads.

Willow Springs neighborhood was the first to test out the devices, using them at golf cart crossings.

"They worked really well," said City Councilmember Becky Wynn.

Acenbrak said HOAs will have to consult with Roswell DOT on placement of the devices and a list of approved vendors. The HOAs would own the devices.

"They are very effective," Acenbrak said. "I think this is going to be very popular."

    Traffic Calming

Great. Now how about we calm the traffic on Hwy 9 (Atlanta Street) where it passes through the Historic District.

Motorists barrel up the hill from the river and speed through to the square, and either turn left there to go to their east Cobb homes, or continue speeding up to City Hall and beyond.

Many, if not most motorists, act as though it's a freeway. I had to tell on guy once, "People LIVE here, you know!"

That's the problem with our automobile culture, when a citizen gets behind the wheel of a car, he ceases to be a citizen, and becomes a "motorist".

The problem of speeding through neighborhoods is nothing new.
    March 16, 2014 | 05:12 PM

I grew up in the 70s and 80s and speed demons drove up and down our access roads back then as well. Not even police presence and artificially low 25mph speed limits slowed down the idiots. I knew of three kids who were hit as a result of it, two of them dying.

I'm one of those rare people that actually drives slow through other people's neighborhoods and respects their homes and families and peace.
