February 26, 2014NORTH FULTON, Ga. —AARP is once again helping North Fulton and Forsyth residents file their taxes on time and all correct. There is no charge for the service, and all tax preparers are trained by AARP.
AARP Tax-Aide is the nation's largest, free, volunteer-run tax assistance and preparation service.
Jim Rogers, AARP's district coordinator for the program says each year from Feb. 1 through April 15, AARP Tax-Aide volunteers prepare federal, state and local tax returns for taxpayers who have straightforward tax returns.
"We have hundreds of volunteers who give of their time and their expertise to help people with their taxes," Rogers said. "All of our volunteers are monitored by the IRS and must pass a test before they are allowed to help others prepare their tax returns."
Many of the volunteers have been AARP preparers for years.
A 2011 customer satisfaction survey gave Tax Aide a 95 percent thumbs up. But it is not for everybody.
"If you have had a CPA do your taxes in the past, you probably should continue with him," Rogers said. "But for many folks, our trained preparers can help you file your taxes with little or no trouble."
The AARP also files tax returns electronically and have returns direct deposited into the client's bank account. That ensures mail thieves rifle mailboxes to steal tax return checks are thwarted. The IRS recommends tax returns be direct deposit. If a check is stolen and cashed, the rightful recipient has no recourse from the government. If the check is cashed, it's gone.
Tax-Aide users don't need to be an AARP member or be a retiree to receive assistance from AARP Tax-Aide volunteers.
Many of the preparers have a lot of tax experience in their business careers. Many volunteers are former CFOs, accountants or similar experience.
But whatever qualifications they may bring to the table, all AARP Tax-Aide tax counselor volunteers receive comprehensive training in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service.
