Fulton School officials act early to cancel schools Tuesday, Wednesday

February 10, 2014
Faced with the second severe weather threat in as many weeks, Fulton School officials took swift action to ensure this week's storms would be handled more effectively than the one that hit in late January.

Before school had ended for most students on Monday, school officials announced the cancellation of schools for students and staff on Tuesday and Wednesday. Within minutes the school system's Facebook page had logged more than 100 "hits," with most praising the system for its early action.

Severe weather was forecast beginning Tuesday, and lasting into Wednesday afternoon. Communication to parents began early, and in earnest with an announcement Sunday evening announcing all school events Monday must end by 6:30 p.m.

Monday morning began with blast emails and phone calls that the school day would be normal, but encouraged parents to pick up their children promptly by 6:30 p.m. if they had after school events.

A spokesperson for the FCSS said school officials had been collaborating with weather and emergency management agencies over the weekend and into Monday morning to monitor the storm.

The two days off this week will likely be made up by students before the end of May, since the previous four days off for weather this year were waived.
