January 27, 2014MILTON, Ga. — The Milton City Council's decision to pass a 30-day moratorium on zoning applications is a step in the right direction, say members of Preserve Rural Milton Initiative.
But they say it doesn't fix the problem.
"It's all they can do now," Laura Rencher, founder of the Preserve Rural Milton Initiative said. "But we want to make sure the community understands it doesn't solve the problem."
Milton City Attorney Ken Jarrard said the moratorium doesn't affect developments already approved or underway or AG-1 developments that don't require rezoning.
Rencher said that the city needs time to create and implement a better subdivision ordinance.
"The solution isn't 1-acre lots, or to stop construction entirely," she said. "The city needs a true land conservation program."
Word is getting out about the initiative.
Preserve Rural Milton signs are popping up on lawns throughout the city, and on Jan. 13, Rencher and her daughter were featured on CBS Atlanta.
"Word is getting out," Rencher said. "We've already run out of signs and have ordered more."
Councilmember Matt Kunz believes the city and community want the same thing.
"The character of the community is what sets us apart from other cities," Kunz said. "And that's a double-edged sword, because it's what drives people to want to move here."
Kunz said they need to find ways to allow for that growth and maintain the character of the community.
Kunz said the moratorium is a small part of the process.
"With so much growth and change, we want to take the time to make sure what we do is done right," Kunz said.
