ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- An alleged bank robber out of Michigan is dead after a self inflicted gunshot while police closed in on him about 4 p.m. today, April 30.

Alpharetta police received a call from a detective from St. Clair County, a suburb of Detroit Michigan, who said he was tracking a suspect wanted in connection with several bank robberies.

The suspect was tracked traveling southbound out of Forsyth County and entering Alpharetta about 4 p.m., said George Gordon, an Alpharetta Police Department spokesman.

The yet unnamed suspect was spotted by Alpharetta police as he entered the city and a slow speed chase ensued.

The suspect, Gordon said refused to stop for officers. The suspect then pulled into a strip mall at the intersection of Old Milton and North Point parkways.

As he pulled into the mall, he tried to lose police but was stuck in traffic. As the man was stopped, police converged on him with guns drawn and the suspect shot himself, Gordon said.

He was pronounced dead on the scene.

According to the Oakland Press, in addition to being a suspect in the St. Clair County bank robbery over the weekend, the man may have held up other banks in Michigan.

Witnesses had described the bandit as a white male in his 40s, between 5 foot 9 and 5 foot 11, with a medium build. He wore dark sunglasses and a dark T-shirt.

This happeneds a block from my house. I can still hear the helicopters hovering. Something like this makes me sad, sometimes people take the easiest way to quick money. He must have had a family that will grieve for him. Were a few dollars worth it?

I'm glad I no longer need to worry about going to the bank since 3 of the banks he robbed are very close to me. One of those banks I use. It's just too bad he killed himself instead of getting arrested.

I went to the Family Dentistry place today. It just so happens I am almost out the door when 20 police cars show up. I didn't hear a gunshot (I suspect it was muffled enough through the insulated walls of the building), but I came on to see what news there was on the event, and sure enough I was in that little mall area.

It is sad that he chose to end his own life, rather than face the consequences of his behavior. Condolences to his family & also to the people that he affected & traumatized throughout his reign of robbing & terrorizing innocent people. Prayers for all!

St. Clair County is not a suburb of Detroit. We are a several counties north of Detroit. Sure would like to know why he felt he needed to rob banks.

I was one of the first ones nearing the site at the end of the chase on North Point Pkwy. I had 3 of my grandkids in my car. My thanks to the officer who stood in the open waving us back while other officers were behind their patrol cars with their weapons drawn. My grandkids heard a shot as we came to a stop. All I can say is thanks........
