Johns Creek police face heat from coroner: M.E. claims cops waited to call

April 03, 2013
JOHNS CREEK, Ga. The Fulton County Medical Examiner's office has complained that Johns Creek police acted slowly to inform them of the city's first murders, having to find out instead from media.

Police were first called to the Grover's apartment around 11:30 a.m. Feb. 4, after one of the victims did not arrive at her work and a colleague asked for a welfare check. The responding officers found all four individuals dead inside the apartment.

Under Georgia Law, the M.E. should be contacted immediately, however it was several hours before police informed them of the Crime.

The reason, said Doug Nurse, spokesman for the police, was there was little the examiner's office could do until police had processed the scene.

"They can't take the body until we're done with the crime scene," Nurse said. "We wanted to get work done on crime scene before they showed up."

He added police had to get a search warrant, which took several hours.

Because media reacted quickly to news of the murder, with many outlets hearing of it through police radio, Nurse said it was no surprise members of the media would hear before the M.E.

"There was never any intent not to call them," he said. "We didn't even have a chance to contact them."

Nurse said Johns Creek Police Chief Ed Dinsmore has spoken with the ME and the two have worked out protocols for the future.

Police are awaiting the results of toxicology tests on blood found at the scene. They believe the murder was a murder-suicide committed by Shivinder Singh Grover, age 52, who killed his wife and two children.
