ROSWELL, Ga - Roswell Mayor Jere Wood is challenging residents to take shorter showers, fix leaky water pipes and only run full loads of dishes and laundry as part of the National Mayor's Challenge for Water Conservation.

Sponsored by the Wyland Foundation, in association with Toyota, the challenge's mission is to promote resource conservation and the importance of sustainability leading up to and throughout Earth Month.

Until April 30, Roswell residents are encouraged to sign a pledge at www.mywaterpledge.com to conserve water and resources.

Cities with the highest percentage of residents who make the commitment are entered to win hundreds of environmentally friendly prizes, including a Toyota Prius, water saving fixtures and gift cards to Lowe's.

"The City of Roswell has always been committed to conserving our natural resources and being a good steward of the environment," Wood said. "I am excited to issue this challenge and hope it will help create additional momentum within our community to be aware of how our everyday actions impact our sustainability, both locally and nationally."

Last year, residents who participated in the challenge pledged to reduce their water use by 4.7 billion gallons.
