JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – The Johns Creek Art Center's third annual Art in Bloom gala March 21 was a bigger success than the first two, said an ecstatic Arts Center Board member Karen Richardson.

Floral studios and floral artists are asked to create a "live" interpretation of works of art submitted by local art galleries, which creates a layer of art over another layer of art – much to the enjoyment of the patrons.

Georgia Nickles, an original JC Arts Center Board member, had the idea to replicate the successful Boston Museum of Fine Art's nationally known art fundraiser that does the same thing – combine art and floral arrangement.

"I was visiting Boston 30 years ago, and my brother-in-law took me to the Boston Museum of Fine Art to see what they do. People came from all over to see it," Nickles said.

She suggested it to the Arts Center Board, but they did not quite understand it until she took fellow board members Tammy Smith and Linda Mauldin to Boston to see for themselves. They loved it, and three years later, so does everyone else.

The floral arrangements are judged for their imaginative renderings of the paintings that are loaned for the event. Alpharetta Floral Market won first place for its inspiration of a Robert Bissell painting loaned from Vinings Gallery.

Heather Bledsoe of H Designs has entered a design all three years, and all three years, she has won second prize. She heard about it three years ago from her mother-in-law, Johns Creek resident and County Commissioner Liz Hausmann.

"I have loved doing this. I also go to Cal Poly Tech [California Polytechnical State University at San Luis Obispo] each year to work on their float in the Rose Parade. They design it, and we live there for a week to arrange the flowers," Bledsoe said.

As for the three second-place finishes, Bledsoe said she is happy with those.

"At least I'm consistent," she said with a laugh.
