Structures on site of new Forsyth County courthouse, jail slated for demolition

January 16, 2013
FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The structures located on the site of Forsyth County's future new courthouse and jail in downtown Cumming are slated for demolition. Preparation work is underway, with demolition expected to begin the week of January 21, weather permitting. Once begun, the demolition process is scheduled to take approximately 45 days.

The structures to be demolished are the parking deck at the intersection of East Main Street and Mason Street, government building and professional building, all on the site of the new courthouse, and a small building on the site of the new jail. The new courthouse and jail projects were approved by Forsyth County voters in November 2011 as part of the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) VII program.

During the demolition, citizens can expect to see a lot of activity near the site in downtown Cumming. Work is scheduled to occur Monday through Saturday, from approximately 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sidewalks near the site will close as needed throughout the course of the project. No extended road closures are expected to be necessary, but intermittent lane closures on the streets surrounding the parking deck may be needed. At their January 8, 2013 work session, the Board of Commissioners awarded the bid for the demolition project to Industrial Facilities Solutions, LLC.

"Forsyth County appreciates the patience of our citizens and others visiting downtown Cumming as the demolition phase of this project begins, and also going forward into the construction of the new courthouse and jail," County Manager Doug Derrer said.

Parking Information

The parking deck closed permanently on December 28. Jurors, traffic arraignment attendees and others doing business at the Forsyth County Courthouse should use the parking lot at the southwest corner of Maple Street and Castleberry Road. Parking areas for both the public and for county employees are designated at the County Administration Building. Additional weekday parking from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the public and for county employees is available at Cumming Baptist Church (spaces marked with a red dot only). A map of the parking locations is available on the Forsyth County Web site at www.forsythco.com.
