CUMMING, Ga. — A homeowner's workshop was lost in a fire at 2700 block of Samples Road. No one was injured, according to the Forsyth County Fire Department, but the 2,000-square foot two-story barn is a complete loss for the owner.

About 10:46 a.m., several drivers and neighbors called 911 to report the fire with small explosions, Forsyth County Fire Division Chief Jason Shivers said.

The property is located east of Ga. 400 off Buford Dam Road near Lake Lanier.

Shivers said the home had minor explosion heat damage, but the workshop located in the rear of the property, which stored several cars, tools and paint— is a total loss.

"It's very heavily damaged," Shivers said. "It was fully engulfed when we arrived."

An exact count of how many cars were in the barn is unknown at this time, as fire marshal investigators are still trying to determine what caused the blast.

"The cars inside the building contributed to the fire load and heavy fire we experienced when we arrived," Shivers said.

By noon, fire crews had extinguished the flames and were conducting salvage and overhaul.

About 25 fire personnel assisted in the call, including five engines, one ladder truck, two battalion chiefs, an ambulance and various support staff.

"We have no indication right now of what might have happened," Shivers said. "Investigators are on scene and have begun their initial investigation. They are talking with witnesses to lead them in a certain direction."

The home-built barn style shed and workshop had two stories and was about 2,000-square-feet in size.

"Unfortunately he had a large number of tools and vehicle maintenance kind of tools in the building along with paint and paint thinners," Shivers said. There's a lot for us to contend with… we will be here for a while."
