December 14, 2012 FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County school officials have released a statement after a man opened fire inside a Connecticut elementary school where his mother worked Friday Dec. 14, killing 26 people, including 18 children, and forcing students to cower in classrooms and then flee with the help of teachers and police.
"The terrible tragedy in Newtown, Conn. serves as a reminder to our entire community about the importance of school safety," said Jennifer Caracciolo, a spokeswoman for the Forsyth County School district. "Emergency response plans, which have been developed in partnership with our community's first responders, are in place at each of our Forsyth County schools.
"Each school regularly practices emergency response drills, and we continually evaluate our safety and security procedures," she said. "Our school counselors and other administrators will be available for students throughout the week if they have questions or concerns."
The Associated Press reports that the shooting suspect is Adam Lanza, 20, son of teacher at the school, Sandy Hook Elementary School, about 60 miles northeast of New York City.
