Third Ga. 400 lane extended in Forsyth County

Project completed two months earlier than expected

December 04, 2012
CUMMING, Ga. — Does more space on Ga. 400 sound like a Christmas wish?

Monday your wish comes true, Keith Golden, of the Georgia Department of Transportation, said.

Motorists can expect an additional lane on Ga. 400 northbound in Forsyth County and improvements to the entrance ramp from Abernathy Road to Ga. 400 northbound in Sandy Springs.

Both improvements were finished up last weekend, Golden said.

Work to widen and extend the entrance ramp from Abernathy Road to Ga. 400 northbound and the construction of a third lane on Ga. 400 northbound from the McGinnis Ferry Road overpass to the Big Creek Greenway Bridge finished Saturday morning Dec 1.

"These projects will improve the overall operation of State Route 400 north by enhancing efficiency and increasing capacity," Golden said. "The longer and wider ramp from Abernathy Road allows more vehicles to merge onto 400 more quickly."

The additional two miles of a third lane on 400 north will aid motorists traveling farther into Forsyth County.

The work was finished two months ahead of the Jan. 31, 2013 completion date. "Improving traffic flow and doing it ahead of schedule is our holiday gift to the users of State Route 400," Golden said.

C.W. Matthews Contracting, Inc. of Marietta was awarded the contract for $3.4 million. The project was funded by the State Road and Tollway Authority's excess toll revenue as one of 12 State Route 400 Improvement Projects.

However several motorists told the Forsyth Herald that congestion will still be an issue during their commutes up to Exits 13 and 14 in Forsyth County.

Mark Johnson, of Cumming, said the fix was "a Band-Aid."

"All it does is move the congestion point north about a mile," Johnson said.

The recently.failed tsplost would have included a third lane on 400 all the way up to exit 14. I voted for it precisely for this reason
