MILTON, GA. – Milton Public Works Director Carter Lucas announced today a portion of Cogburn Road will be closed starting Saturday, May 19, until early August so that the bridge over Cooper Sandy Creek between Bethany Bend and Webb Road may be replaced.
The bridge just south of St. Francis High School will be replaced with a culvert, said Milton spokesman Jason Wright.
Additionally, Lucas will update motorists weekly on the project with photos and blog posts via the city's Web site beginning Monday, May 21.
The project has been timed specifically to coincide with summer break and improvements at the Cogburn Road, Bethany Bend, Hopewell Road intersection to be completed before Cambridge High School opens. Access to existing property owners will be maintained at all times.
"This bridge was identified as the top priority for replacement in the city's inventory from 2009," said Lucas. "Based on traffic counts, there are more than 10,000 vehicles a day that travel over this bridge - so it absolutely must be replaced as soon as possible."
The proposed project will replace the bridge with an arched culvert spanning the creek, which means minimal impact to the waterway and savings in both time and taxpayer money.
The updates will also be posted on the city's Facebook and Twitter pages.
Oxford-based Hitson Construction Inc. won the contract with a low bid of $478,020 from the four received.
