North Gwinnett 49, Johns Creek 19 Gladiators thumped in playoff opener

State-ranked N. Gwinnett proves too much for JCHS

November 21, 2012
SUWANEE, Ga. Johns Creek was knocked out of the state Class AAAAAA playoffs in the first round, losing 49-19 last Friday to No. 2-ranked North Gwinnett.

The Cougars, who finished the season 8-3, struggled against the deep and talented Bulldogs, who were bigger up front on offense and the first team this season to really frustrate the Johns Creek defense.

North Gwinnett quarterback Michael Haynes passed for 250 yards and four touchdowns. His backup also threw for a pair of scores. The Bulldogs (10-1) led 28-7 at the half and expanded their lead to 49-7 after three quarters.

Johns Creek kept it close early, tying the game 7-7 in the opening period when quarterback Skye Overton scored on a 3-yard run. The Gladiators had capitalized on a North Gwinnett turnover near midfield.

An effective North Gwinnett defense limited Overton to 61 yards rushing and 47 yards passing on six of 15 completions.

The Gladiators scored twice in the fourth quarter on a 9-yard pass from Jack Deweese to Bradon Fortin and a 46-yard interception return by Sam Arrington.
