June 11, 2014FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A new parking facility located near the Forsyth County Administration building will begin construction in the coming weeks.
The future five-level, 491-space Mason Street parking facility is the second of two parking decks that are part of the new courthouse and jail project funded by the voter-approved Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) VII program.
To move forward with construction of the Mason Street parking facility, the construction fence that was erected in April for site preparation will be extended through the weekend of June 7.
The construction resulted in the loss of the county employee parking area on the north side of the county administration building and the 15-minute loading and unloading spaces along School Street. The Water and Sewer Department payment dropbox is being moved from School Street to the grassy area near the one-hour public parking lot along Mason Street.
Construction of the three-level, 222-space Castleberry Parking Facility at the intersection of Castleberry Road and Maple Street has been completed.
At their June 5 meeting, the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners approved a Resolution conveying title of that deck to the city of Cumming.
The opening of the Castleberry Parking Facility will be at the discretion of city officials.
Weekday, daytime public parking spaces are available at several locations near the County Administration Building.
Limited public parking areas at the County
Administration Building are located off of Mason Street and are accessible from Main
Last summer, local and state officials, staff, community members and guests gathered in downtown Cumming for a groundbreaking ceremony for Forsyth County's new courthouse and jail.
The courthouse features space for State Court, Superior Court, Clerk of Court, District Attorney and Solicitor Offices.
The project budget totals $100 million.
The total project includes a new jail with approximately 175,000 square-feet, a 160,000 square-feet new courthouse.
Both facilities are expected to be completed in December and functional early next year.
The proposed design includes a bridge connection between the court and jail facilities to allow for safe transportation of inmates.
