FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The county animal shelter has received a $20,000 boost from the community that will add cat cages to the new facility.

On Oct. 8, Forsyth Deputy County Manager Tim Merritt told commissioners two different groups donated $10,000 each that will enable the county to add 24 cat cages back into the budget and into the project.

The Humane Society of Forsyth County donated $10,000, and the newly formed Friends of Forsyth County Animal Shelter donated another $10,000.

The new infusion increased the budget for the animal shelter.

The new animal shelter will be located on County Way off Ga. 400 in northern Forsyth County and is expected to be completed in the spring of 2014.

It is estimated to cost the county about $690,000 the first year to operate the shelter, which includes a new truck.

The approximately 13,700-square-foot facility broke ground in March and was designed by RKS Green Consulting and Shelterplanners.com. The general contractor for the project is CRS Building Corporation.

The new shelter will replace the current arrangement in which the county contracts out shelter operations located at 1904 Old Atlanta Road. Since the 1980s, the county has had an agreement with Dr. Lanier and Annette Orr, who have provided animal shelter services for the community.

Forsyth County's new animal shelter construction is funded by the voter-approved Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) VII program.

Heading the project is the Animal Control and Shelter Advisory Committee, a group formed to help ensure the project was undertaken in the most effective and efficient manner possible.

The animal shelter committee will hold their next meeting Oct. 16.
