Emory Johns Creek Hospital’s new Breast Center of Excellence is designed for women to provide top-notch care while giving them a spa-like atmosphere.

June 11, 2013JOHNS CREEK, GA. – Emory Johns Creek Hospital is expanding its women's services with a new $1.5 million Breast Center of Excellence that will cater to the woman's experience and concerns during visits.
Dr. Kimberly Lairet said the new 4,000-square-foot Breast Center will be the latest addition (opening in July) for serving Johns Creek and its environs.
"It is part of our commitment to quality care for our patients," Lairet said.
This includes not only breast surgery, but mammography, ultra-sound, biopsy and surgeon referral.
"We are accredited by the Commission on Cancer by the American College of Surgeons. It is all part of our commitment to quality care," said Lairet. "We offer the full spectrum of diagnostic facilities and care."
To earn voluntary Commission on Cancer accreditation, a cancer program must meet 34 CoC quality care standards, be evaluated every three years through a survey process, and maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive patient-centered care.
All cancer patients who come to Emory Johns Creek for their cancer care can expect a multidisciplinary, team approach in treating their cancer as a complex group of diseases that requires consultation among surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists and other cancer specialists. This multidisciplinary partnership results in improved patient care.
Dr. Stephen Szabo leads the cancer committee at Emory Johns Creek Hospital and is an oncologist with Georgia Cancer Specialists. He said that this CoC accreditation means that patients will have access to information on clinical trials and the newest treatments available for all types of cancers.
"We will also provide assessment of their treatment plans based on evidence-based national treatment guidelines."
Emory Johns Creek is also going to great pains to make the Breast Center more aesthetically pleasing and inviting. Any trip to the hospital can be stressful, and the staff wants to make visits as pleasant as possible.
"The Breast Center will look more like a spa than a hospital room. We will have three-dimensional imaging that reduces recalls for patients to come back and produces a better diagnosis," she said.
Everything is being designed with the patient's comfort and peace of mind taken into advisement. Valet parking at the front entrance is just the beginning. The Breast Center and Imaging Center are just a few steps from the front entrance that lead to private women's waiting areas.
The entire area is designed to look more like a spa than a hospital room, Lairet said.
For all patients, Emory Johns Creek has adopted its own unique structured method of patient care that they call SIBER rounding. Anyone who has been in a hospital, know what it is like waiting for the doctor to make his or her rounds.
That is the one time the patient may have to get some real information about the care the patient is receiving.
Dr. Elizabeth De (pronounced DAY) is the director of the Accountable Care Unit and a big part of her job is to increase patient satisfaction while in the hospital. That led to the creation of SIBR rounding – Structured Interdisciplinary Bedside Rounds – which is much more than just having the doctor come by and ask a few questions.
"The patient sees all of the caregivers in the loop. It is also a chance for the patient to have input as well," De said.
So the SIBR rounds are done in conjunction with the surgeon or doctor in charge of the patient, but can also include the pharmacist, the nutritionist, the social worker and other specialists whose input may be necessary.
"They huddle before going into each patient's room," De said. "They are able to give the patient a better synopsis of what has been done and make sure everyone is on the same page."
Emory's wrinkle in SIBR rounding is to include the patient as a participant.
"Often, it is the patient who can say best what procedures have been done or what he has been prescribed. The patient gets the chance to have some input," De said. "Then they go over the plan for the day in plain English."
This is just part of the reason EJCH has been named to the Georgia Hospital Association's Chairman's Circle for patient safety in 2012. The Chairman's Circle is the second highest category in the GHA's Hospital Engagement Network recognition program and places the hospital between the 80th and 90th percentile or above. The hospital is now in the top third of all 116 Georgia hospitals participating in the GHA Engagement Network.
