Roark promoted to Navy commander

ROSWELL, Ga. – Stephen B. Roark, a Roswell resident since 2004, has been promoted to the rank of commander, United States Navy, in a ceremony held at the Naval Operations Support Command at Dobbins ARB in Marietta. The promotion ceremony was presided over by Cmdr. Brian Heym, and attendees included Roark’s wife Jenny and children Trinity, 13, Paul, 12, and Veronica, 9.

Roark enlisted in the Navy in 1993 after graduating from the University of West Florida. He served onboard the USS Boone until he was selected for Officer Candidate School. He received his commission in November 1996 and attended Surface Warfare Officer School. He has since served in Hawaii, San Diego, Houston and Kuwait. In 2004, he moved to Roswell, transferred to Dobbins and has worked for Sixth Fleet Staff and EUCOM/AFRICOM Staff. He is currently assigned to NR U.S. Fleet Forces Atlanta.

LaCrosse wins statewide warrior contest

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – The National Guard has an annual Best Warrior Competition to decide who to represent the state of Georgia in the regional finals and possibly the national competition in Washington, D.C. SPC Benjamin J. LaCrosse of Johns Creek, who is currently preparing for his second tour in Afghanistan, represented his local 277th unit in the statewide competition at Ft. Stewart and was named the winner after a grueling three-day competition. LaCrosse has been in the National Guard for the past five years. He is employed at the AAA Auto Service located on McGinnis Ferry Road.

Sweeney returns from overseas deployment

ROSWELL, Ga. – Army Spec. Michael A. Sweeney has returned to the U.S. after being deployed overseas at a forward operating base to serve in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Operation Enduring Freedom is the official name given to anti-terrorism military operations involving U.S. troops and allied coalition partners.

Sweeney is a combat medic assigned to the 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. He has served in the military for three years. He is the son of Maricela and Jim Sweeney of Roswell and a 2006 graduate of Roswell High School.

Mitchum graduates Navy recruit training

GREAT LAKES, Ill. – Navy Seaman Sherrill A. Mitchum, son of Delta K. and Sherrill A. Mitchum of Alpharetta, was recently promoted to his current rank upon graduation from recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He received the early promotion for outstanding performance during all phases of the training cycle.  

Mitchum is a 2008 graduate of South Forsyth High School in Cumming.

Corbin graduates basic combat training

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Army Pvt. Christopher Corbin has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

Corbin is the son of Robert Corbin of Worwich, R.I., and Michelle Lynn of Cumming. He is also the grandson of Robert and Carylon Corbin of Salem, N.H.

McSweeney and Mogle graduate basic infantry training

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Army Spec. Robert S. McSweeney and Army Pvt. Stephen D. Mogle have graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning in Columbus.

McSweeney is the son of Ivy McSweeney of Brooklyn, N.Y., and nephew of Cheryl McSweeney of Crique Way in Roswell. He is a 2009 graduate of Centennial High School in Roswell.

Mogle is the son of Margaret Mogle and nephew of Donna Mogle, both of Johns Creek. He is a 2012 graduate of Northview High School.

Warfield enlists in Navy

RALEIGH, N.C. – Russell C. Warfield, son of Jan C. Johnson of Roswell and Gregory D. Warfield, of Aiken, S.C., recently enlisted in the United States Navy under the Delayed Entry Program at Navy Recruiting District, Raleigh, N.C.

Warfield will report for active duty to undergo basic training at the Navy’s Recruit Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 2012 graduate of the University of South Carolina.

Beck graduates Navy nuclear power training

GOOSE CREEK, S.C. – Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Jeremy C. Beck has graduated from the U.S. Navy’s Nuclear Power School at Naval Nuclear Power Training Command in Goose Creek, S.C.

Beck is the son of Fredrick and Jae Hee Beck of Alpharetta. He is a 2005 graduate of Milton High School.

Sorrow and Goldfinger graduate Air Force basic training

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Air Force Airmen John W. Sorrow and Kevin N. Goldfinger have both graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

Sorrow is the son of Anne Sorrow of Cumming and Philip Sorrow of Tucker. He is a 2012 graduate of South Forsyth High School in Cumming.

Goldfinger is the son of Denise Hupp of Cumming and is a 2012 graduate of Forsyth Central High School.
