Georgia ranks in top 10 for dog bites

Recent poll shows Georgia had ninth most claims for dog attacks

May 20, 2013
ATLANTA May 19 marks the first day for National Dog Bite Prevention Week. A recent State Farm poll shows that Georgians might have something to worry about.

According to State Farm, Georgia ranks No. 9 for states with the most claims for dog bites, with 121 claims worth $3.3 million.

Forsyth County Animal Control said there were 142 dog bites reported in 2012 and so far, 37 dog bites have been reported in 2013.

Numbers for Fulton were not available by our news deadline.

The American Veterinary Medical Association is now offering residents of Georgia tips on how to reduce the number of dog bites.

"Dogs are wonderful, intelligent and loyal creatures, but they depend on responsible owners to teach them how to behave around people," said Dr. Douglas G. Aspros, president of the AVMA. "Understanding how dogs behave and how to behave around dogs could save countless people from the serious physical and emotional consequences of a dog bite."

Needs to make it a law 4 people Have told me pits killed their dogs. I have seen loose 1
People who hoard them. Thread killers are On our roads in people yards n we are saving other countries while children are being eaten. Breeders getting a dog pregnant 15 times should be left in ocean on a sinking ship. We would not have dogsbite if dumb people would stipulation saying it is how they ate raised. They ate raised to hunt. Ate theeze people insane they hunt bear boar n wild animals. Theeze animals are robbing our freedom. Dog are pets. But they are not pets. N we should put There owners on chains in pound good night.

If insurance don't cover a pitbull why are they in trailers apartments. Subdivision with no dangerous dogbreed allowed. Preaso varnish pits n rocks.n akitas should not be in thoose homes if lease or hoa has a no dangerous dog law. People having 3 and 4 pitch is not responsible and kids walking THEM alone or even a sherpard alone.it a japense sharper or chow.or rockw's. What must happen before We make spay n netur pits a law. People just Get them to BREED. Backyard breeders should pay fines n fix aall bully breeds or mixed. In Atlanta I saw 1 loose pit. This must be year of pig because We have seen LOOSE ones n 1 kid was taking 3 home he found on road. Said oh they are good dogs.

All the breed legislation in the world doesn't help if owners aren't doing three things:
    1. Training their dogs how to deal with new things, including strange people, without biting them.
    2. Controlling their dogs. Sturdy fences and sturdy leashes make good neighbors.
    3. Spaying and neutering. There are simply too many dogs around, most of them produced by people who thought Suzie Floozy's puppies were going to be worth money. News flash: they're not. If you don't know how to produce healthy puppies with stable temperaments, spay Suzie Floozy. Please!
Pit bulls aren't the problem. People who think they know about dogs because they've seen one once are the problem.
