Shootout leaves man dead, Alpharetta officer injured

April 12, 2013
ALPHARETTA, Ga. A local police officer was shot and hospitalized after a shootout in which one man is left dead.

The Alpharetta police officer was engaged in a routine traffic stop on South Main Street in Alpharetta. When he approached the driver, the man shot the officer, hitting him in the abdomen, police say.

The suspect then fled the scene, driving south on Main Street (Ga. 9). The officer was able to radio for help.

A Roswell police officer saw the suspect vehicle and chased it onto Holcomb Bridge Road and Ga. 400. The chase entered Sandy Springs, where the suspect's car crashed near Northridge Drive. The suspect fled the scene and, when Alpharetta and Roswell police closed in, engaged in a shootout with police. He was killed at the scene.

The Alpharetta officer who was shot was taken to North Fulton Hospital, where he is in stable condition.

A portion of Ga. 400 is closed as the investigation is conducted.

To all my fellow Alpharetta neighbors, I cannot believe that no one has made a comment on how much we support out police department. Over the weekend one of our finest was shot many times protecting us and yet not a word or support or praise . You should all be ashamed. It it was a story about a horse show or council member on reality Tv it would have comment after comment. Where is the mayor or council on this, no open letter of thanks , nothing. This is sickening . These men and women work crappy hours for bad pay ( yes Alpharetta bad pay) and one is shot by a crazy person and not a word. Ashamed I am ASHAMED!

We are ALWAYS grateful to the APD for protecting us from the nuts, psychos, child molesters, rapists and murderers! Just because there aren't 100 comments here praising this heroic officer's sacrifice (a daily risk by the way even with a routine traffic stop like this one started out as), doesn't mean we aren't appreciative!

Stop being such a drama queen!
