'Sweeping Up Glass' named 2013 Roswell Reads book

December 12, 2012
ROSWELL, Ga. – “Sweeping Up Glass,” by Carolyn Wall has been selected as the 2013 Roswell Reads book.

“Some folks think reading is old-school,” said Morgan Rogers, with the Roswell Recreation Department, “but it’s not.”

Each year, Roswell Reads picks a book and promotes reading throughout the community during the months of February and March. A series of lectures and events are held throughout those months. It concludes with lunch with the author.

This is the eighth year for Roswell Reads.

Set in Kentucky during the Great Depression, “Sweeping Up Glass” has won numerous awards for its portrayal of mental health and segregation since it was published in 2009.

“We try to find authors who are not necessarily the most well-known but whose works have received excellent reviews,” said Louise Conti, who is on the Roswell Reads committee. “We like to introduce folks to an author they may never have read before.”

Roswell’s Detective Ken Kraus recently completed an eight-year study of criminal forensics.

“The Body Farm,” the Harvard of hellish violence, is in the University of Tennessee’s forensic academy. It is considered the best premiere forensics training facility where human decomposition can be studied in a variety of settings in varying conditions, in order to develop techniques for extracting information such as the timing and circumstances of death from human remains.

“It’s hands on and real forensics at a college level,” said Kraus. “I will work with my fellow employees to use my training and knowledge...to keep Roswell safe.”

Kraus said he aims to make Roswell to the best forensic police department in Georgia.

“We believe we have the safest city in the state and that is due in large part to the dedication and work of our police officers,” said Roswell Mayor Jere Wood.
