New park a partnership

Open to public outside of school hours

December 11, 2012
MILTON, Ga. — Milton's newest park, Friendship Community Park, is a partnership between Fulton County Schools and the city. And like any partnership, there are pros and cons to the deal.

A pro would be nearly two acres of new parkland for the city in an area quickly lacking in open space. And it's right near the heart of Crabapple, between two schools, so there will always be plenty of children to play in it.

Then there are the downsides – the city might have built and developed the park, but the land still belongs to the school system. The park is a public park only when school is not in session. During school hours, it's part of the schools.

"The park itself is closed to the general public during active school hours," said Interim Parks Director Jim Cregge. "They own the land, but we did the improvements."

School hours are considered generally from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays.

The city invested $175,000 in the park and will pay a $10,000 sum annually for maintenance, which is still much cheaper than buying the land.

The park, which opened Dec. 1, features walking paths, a half-court basketball court, a pavilion and picnic benches, while still leaving plenty of area for open space.

All city parks are closed from midnight to 6 a.m. every day.
