CUMMING, A 44-year-old man was struck by a van and killed on Nov. 16 on Ga. Hwy. 9 (Atlanta Hwy.) as he was crossing the roadway.

According to Forsyth County Sheriff's Office Traffic Specialist Investigator Ron Tomblin, Felix Escorcia of 6465 Atlanta Hwy., Alpharetta, Ga. was transported to North Fulton Hospital on Friday evening after being struck by the van. He died later that night.

Inv. Tomblin stated that Escorcia was crossing Ga. Hwy. 9 (Atlanta Hwy.) near Pine Ridge Mobile Home Park, where he lived. He was walking in the southbound lane when he was struck by a 2004 Chevrolet van, traveling southbound, being driven by Michael Dean Masi, 48, of Village Green Way, Alpharetta, Ga. "After the impact, Mr. Escorcia was thrown approximately 150 feet where he then came to rest on the west shoulder of Atlanta Highway," Inv. Tomblin said.

Masi, the driver of the van, was arrested at the scene for driving under the influence. He was transported to the Forsyth County Detention Center that evening. He was released around midnight on bond. He is scheduled to appear in State Court on Feb. 1, 2013. He was not injured in the crash.

The crash occurred at 7:58 p.m., Nov. 16. No other vehicles or persons were involved.

The crash remains under investigation. Further charges could be filed.
