ROSWELL, Ga. The city of Roswell and the Cultural Arts Board (CAB) have awarded a combined $25,000 from Contracts for Cultural Services (CFCS), the first ever financial support program developed for Roswell nonprofit arts and cultural organizations. Outside the city of Atlanta's Office of Cultural Affairs and the Fulton County Arts Council, this is the only local government-based program for support of arts and cultural organizations in metro Atlanta.

The CAB established four categories for the first funding cycle to meet a variety of needs and encourage local cultural services that enrich and benefit the entire community, particularly those that deliver arts and cultural programs to Roswell's underserved populations.

Nine applications were received in three of the four categories. These include:

Arts/Cultural Services funding in support of operational expenses; Project Support funding in support of ongoing programs or a special program or event; and Arts Education funding support for programs presented to school-age children. The fourth category was New Ventures Development.

"We are excited to be able to offer support to many of our arts and cultural organizations here in Roswell for the first time through the new Contracts for Cultural Services program," said Morgan Timmis, historic and cultural affairs manager for Roswell. "We couldn't be more pleased with the applications we received and have high expectations for the impact these programs and groups will have on our community."

Award recipients were chosen by a volunteer peer review advisory panel comprising individuals with expertise in the various disciplines reflected in the applications. The panel applied established review criteria to each proposal to ensure that fair consideration was given. The CAB then reviewed the panel's recommendations and made its own recommendation for approval to Roswell's mayor and the Roswell City Council.

The winners are the Michael O'Neal Singers, Georgia Regional Girls' Choir, Georgia Ensemble Theatre, Atlanta Dance Theatre, Roswell Dance Theatre, Riverside Chamber Players, the Teaching Museum North and Hillside Elementary PTA.

The mayor and council approved the funding allocations on Monday, Oct. 22.
