October 10, 2012JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – The Kroger at Barnwell Road and Holcomb Bridge Road breezed through the Johns Creek Planning Commission Oct. 2 for approval of a new fuel center at the grocery store.
Often, new fuel centers can bring down citizen opposition, but all of the citizen comment was in favor of the new seven-bay fuel center at Rivermont Crossing Shopping Center at the northwest corner of the intersection.
Representing Kroger, Paul Xhajanka said the fuel center had been the No. 1 request from its patrons at that store.
"It has been an underperforming location. We think the addition of the fuel center would add [to the store's appeal] and help its performance in the long term," Xhajanka said.
In addition, Kroger plans a $1.5 million renovation of the entire store at Rivermont Crossing.
David Kornbluh, representing the Johns Creek Community Association, said it had no objections from member community Rivermont Homeowners Association. The JCCA's only concern was access from Barnwell Road.
"We would like to see that addressed," said Kornbluh.
Marvin Hoeflinger, president of the Rivermont HOA, said the subdivision welcomed the Kroger proposal. However during rush hour, access was difficult to Rivermont Crossing. He asked the city to study putting a traffic signal at the Barnwell/Holcomb Bridge intersection.
"But we welcome an alternative to going to Old Alabama Road for gas," Hoeflinger said.
The planning commission gave its unanimous approval to the project.
In other business, the request for 22 lots on a 10-acre site at Buice Road and Autrey Mill Road was tabled for 30 days at the applicant's request.
Ashton Atlanta Realty, represented by Nathan V. Hendricks, asked for the deferral for more time to submit a revised site plan with a reduction to 16 homes on the site. The deferral was granted, and the zoning request will come before the board Nov. 6.
