MILTON, Ga. — Milton Councilmember Matt Kunz put on protective gear recently, but he did not stick around for the punches.

He got a good laugh by putting on the Rape Aggression Defense instructor's gear at the Milton regular meeting Oct. 1.

He just wanted to see what the gear felt like, he later said.

The gear is part of the Milton Police Department's RAD program, which teaches women in the community how to ward off an attacker.

The gear was purchased with a recent $3,300 donation by the Milton Public Safety Fund to the police and fire departments.

The fund was developed by local civic and city business leaders to raise money for public safety initiatives, including gear.

Since 2007, they have raised about $22,000, said Jan Fowler, chairman of the public safety fund.

"We've been able to provide much needed equipment to help our public safety programs," Fowler said. "From equipment to check blood oxygen levels at fires, to gun range kits for police officers."

The fund is currently running a fall fundraiser called Flower Power, selling fall bulbs online and onsite Oct. 20 at the Milton Roundup at Birmingham United Methodist Church, 15770 Birmingham Highway.

The fund relies on businesses and residents to donate monies to help meet the growing needs of Milton's fire and police departments.

"The city is growing, and we're working hard to help the two departments get what they need to better care for the residents," Fowler said.

Milton Fire Chief Robert Edgar said he is grateful for the work of the nonprofit.

"We are very fortunate to have a nonprofit organization supporting our firefighters," Edgar said, "which in-turn allows us to better meet the needs of the community."
