Col. Jack Peevy, US Army (Ret), 71, a native of Alpharetta GA, passed away Jan. 7, 2014 after a brief illness. He attended North Georgia College (now University of North Georgia) where he earned a BS in Business Administration and was commissioned as an Infantry Officer in 1964. In 1965 he was a Rifle Platoon Leader in the 1st Battalion (Airborne), 8th Calvary, 1st Air Calvary Division in Vietnam. As a result of hostile operations he was wounded seven times and spent two and a half years in various military hospitals. In spite of severe wounds he returned to active duty at Ft. Bragg, NC where he commanded Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 6th Special Forces Group (Airborne.) He had staff assignments in Intelligence and Operations, served as a B Team S-3, as a B Team Commander, and as the Battalion S-3. He served in Civil Affairs operations, was Executive Officer of a Military Intelligence Detachment (Strategic), Force Modernization Staff in 2nd Army and was Deputy Commander of a Military Intelligence Command. He then commanded a Military Intelligence Company (Combat Electronic Warfare and Intelligence), Special Forces Group (Airborne). These units were recognized as extremely challenging organizations within the Special Operations arena. Jack was promoted to Colonel and became the Deputy G-2 in Third Army at Ft McPherson, GA. He was assigned to Forces Command during Desert Storm. He took command of a Military Intelligence Detachment (Strategic) for his final assignment and retired in 1994 with 30 years of service. His awards, decorations and qualifications include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal with V Device, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Parachutist Badge, Combat Infantryman's Badge, and the Special Forces Tab. After retiring from the US Army Jack became a successful real estate entrepreneur in north Fulton County. Last year he donated two houses to the Alpharetta Historical Society that had been in his family for many decades; one which pre-dated the American Civil War. Jack Peevy was a quiet man and a generous man. The retired U.S. Army colonel made a $2.1 million donation to his alma mater, North Georgia College, now known as the University of North Georgia, to benefit the Corps of Cadets (The Boar's Head Brigade) with further academic and non academic needs. Col. Peevy was active in the Republican party of Georgia and supported many conservative candidates nationwide. In 2013 Col. Peevy was selected as a Distinguished Alumnus of the University of North Georgia in Dahlonega GA formerly North Georgia College. He was active in several veterans' organizations including the Special Forces Assn, Atlanta Vietnam Veterans Business Assn, North Georgia Corps of Cadets Association, and the Military Officers Association of America. He was a member of the BMW Club of America. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Spence Wills; father, Hoye Peevy and step-father, W.E. (Edwin) Wills. He is survived by his good friends Kim & Brad Trego, Pete Glover, numerous cousins including Carol Scott, William Spence and Dr John Bailey and many veterans and classmates. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The University of North Georgia Foundation–Dahlonega (Class of '64 Scholarship Fund In the name of Jack Peevy on the memo line), P.O. Box 1599, Dahlonega, Georgia 30533. Funeral Services were held at Northside Chapel Funeral Directors on Tuesday, January 14 at 11:00 a.m. Interment with full Military Honors followed at Georgia National Cemetery.
