Letters to Editor: Concern regarding Milton Town Council, Community Development Department and realtors and developers involved in the Ga. 9 visioning process

March 20, 2013
We want to express concern regarding recent activities of the Milton Town Council, Community Development Department and realtors and developers involved in the Ga. 9 visioning process.

Our family lives in Oakstone Glen, a subdivision near the 9-acre parcel on Bethany Bend which has been under consideration for rezoning and building a 95-unit assisted living facility and 17 single-family residences. This proposal has been consistently and explicitly opposed.

My husband and I started attending meetings involving the rezoning and proposed development of this area:

On Feb. 13, I attended community meeting No. 1 of the Ga. 9 North visioning project at which many people were shocked to see that the 9-acre Bethany Bend parcel had been absorbed into the Ga. 9 project. There was considerable and heated reaction to this because the same disputed proposal was simply being repackaged.

On Feb. 26, my husband and I attended the city Planning Commission meeting at which the developers of the assisted living facility and town homes project withdrew their petition for rezoning the 9-acre Bethany Bend parcel.

It was clear to all who attended these meetings that there must have been communication between Milton officials and the developers and that the rezoning would be effected under the cover of the Ga. 9 project. In fact, we learned that there was a subsequent meeting to which stakeholding residents were not invited. It is discouraging to think that this could be the way things are done here.

The city of Milton markets itself as a community that embraces the values of small-town life and promotes its rural character. We elect officials whose decisions we believe are going to sustain these qualities, and we pay our professional planning personnel to help us cultivate them as well. To do other than this betrays their good faith commitment to the community they serve.
