Road projects continue to progress in Forsyth County including two projects on Majors Road.

John Cunard, director of engineering for the county, said that a $705,000 bid award to Reid & Reid Contractors of Cumming will widen and improve the geometry of Majors Road from Shiloh Road to Ga. 400.

"It will still be a two-lane road, just wider with shoulders and ditches," he said. "So we're making it safer."

Another section of Majors Road, this one from Castleberry Road to Ga. 9, will be improved from a gravel road to a paved road. This will be done by way of a reclamation project, which uses the materials of the gravel road to make the paved road. Blount Construction was awarded the project with a bid of $293,000 for the 3,400-foot section of road.

Blount Construction also will be paid $95,000 on a reclamation project on a half mile of River Club Drive in the Chattahoochee River Club subdivision. The low bidders were awarded contracts at the Board of Commissioners Oct. 11 meeting.

Cunard said the public comment from meetings on Castleberry Brookwood, Union Hill and Bethelview road widening projects are being considered in the final design.

"All public cooments from all the meetings are compiled and looked at," he said.

Suggested changes to the conceptual plans have always caused changes to the final plans, Cunard said.

"If it can be done and it's economically feasible for us to do it and within our design guidelines, then we comply with the comments that are made," he said.

Construction on Market Place Parkway from Ga. 20 to just south of Pendley Road are nearing completion, he said. This portion of the project will be finished before the end of the year.

Cunard said the state has no segments of Ga. 9 programmed for improvement at this time.

The Atlanta Regional Commission projects no funding for improvements to Ga. 9 before 2011. Comments can still be made on the Mobility 2030 plan by visiting www.atlreg.com.
