CUMMING, Ga. — Lambert junior Asher Thompson, 17 was named the Georgia DECA president at the state competition held last month.

DECA is an association of marketing students that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management.

"This is a great honor for him," said Missy Thompson, his mother. "This year the International DECA competition will be held in Atlanta and Asher is excited to welcome them."

As a sophomore, Thompson served as Ga. DECA vice president and ran a statewide campaign Feb. 27 through March 1 at the state DECA career development conference, which included an interview, campaign booth and speech to about 600 DECA students from throughout the state.

"I am honored and humbled to be elected as Georgia DECA's State President," Asher said. "This organization has meant the world to me over the past three years and I am thrilled to be given another opportunity to serve it.

"The new State Action Team is excited for the year ahead and is working hard to prepare a Program of Work, which will be released later this month, to allow Georgia DECA to be a continued success," he said.

Thompson is more than prepared for the job.

He's an Eagle Scout, the Lambert Branding Company (school's merchandise store) chief financial officer, and a member of several National Honor Societies as well as the State Superintendent Advisory Council.

"Asher's academic performance is highly impressive," said L.C. "Buster" Evans, the county school superintendent. "While performing at high levels academically during his time at Lambert High School, Asher has been involved in a variety of student activities, including serving on the Superintendent's Advisory Committee for State Superintendent Dr. John Barge."

As DECA President, Thompson will be responsible for various management duties for the association including overseeing a nine-member state action team and handling communications between the state DECA program and the International DECA program.

"I look forward to working with Asher this year," Ga. DECA Executive Director Shannon Aaron said. "His leadership skills will help drive Georgia DECA to another successful year."
