Fulton students get a break on make-up for snow days

School officials waive four days, but all future weather days will be made up

February 05, 2014
The calendar for the Fulton County School System will be four days lighter this semester as district officials opted to waive any make-up for the days taken this year. Moving forward, however, any future school closing because of weather will be made up before the end of the school year.

Unlike most metro counties, many of which have already announced make-up days for students and staff, the FCSS is a charter system and not subject to attendance mandates.

Samantha Evans, communications director for the Fulton School System, explained the system's charter status waives it of many state education laws, including the requirement students be in school for the equivalent of 180-days.

Between the day off for extreme temperatures in early January and the three-day break for snow in late January, Fulton School students were looking at potentially making up four days of school by the end of the school year.

As of 4 p.m. on Wednesday, school system officials were closely watching a weather system due to arrive in Georgia on Thursday afternoon which could produce winter weather conditions.
