October 03, 2013ROSWELL, Ga. – Mountain Park Elementary School was among the eight Georgia public schools to be named a 2013 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. The award honors those schools that maintain a high achievement level or are making significant progress in closing the achievement gap.
Mountain Park was honored in the category of "Exemplary High Performing Schools," which indicates the school is among the state's highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or national testing in both reading (English language arts) and mathematics for the most recent years tested.
The second category is "Exemplary Improving Schools," which honors schools with at least 40 percent of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds that have made the most progress in improving student performance.
"National Blue Ribbon Schools are another shining example of the great things happening in Georgia schools [and] are to be commended for their outstanding student performance," said State School Superintendent John Barge.
On Nov. 19, the U.S. Department of Education will honor Mountain Park Elementary, along with 285 additional Blue Ribbon schools from across the nation, at a recognition ceremony in Washington, D.C.
In addition to Mountain Park, the other 2013 National Blue Ribbon schools in Georgia include Daves Creek ES (Forsyth County), Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (Marietta City), Tritt ES (Cobb County), Fair Oaks ES (Cobb County), Middle Ridge ES (Newton County), Sugar Hill ES (Hall County) and Webster County High School.
This is the second time in 10 years that Mountain Park has been named one of the nation's top schools. The school was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2003, after being named a Georgia School of Excellence in 2001.
"We are so proud of the learning and teaching at our school and are excited to be recognized for it," said Mountain Park Principal Stacy Perlman. "We are a team of teachers, students, staff and parents who are all working for the success of our students. This award is a credit to the entire school community and their efforts."
Perlman has been the school's principal since July 2007.
Mountain Park is now one of only nine schools in Fulton County to be named a National Blue Ribbon School since the program began in 1982. Other area schools with the distinction include Milton HS (2008), River Trail MS (2007), Chattahoochee HS (1997), Roswell HS (1996), Dolvin ES (1990) and Crabapple Middle School (1988).
