August 19, 2013ROSWELL, Ga. — On Aug. 25, the ninth annual Miss Mary's Ice Cream Crankin' will bring more than 40 groups with their own homemade ice cream to the Historic Roswell Square, located at the 600 block of Atlanta Street.
Each group of "crankers" will be crafting their own ice cream recipes and bringing them to serve to all the attendees.
The crankers, called such because of the hand cranks used to make ice cream the old-fashioned way, consist of a variety of organizations, including companies, churches and civic groups.
This year, attendees can expect to sample more than 100 flavors of homemade ice cream — if they have room. The flavors will also be sampled by a panel of judges, who will decide the best recipes in each of four categories: vanilla-based, chocolate-based, fruit-based and specialty.
Proceeds from the Ice Cream Crankin' will benefit the Drake House, a program that provides emergency housing for homeless moms and their children in the North Fulton area. Last year, the event raised more than $50,000 for the program.
Karen Pye, development director at the Drake House, said that the program had helped more than 275 families with more than 500 children since it was founded in 2004.
The program provides apartments for the families to use rent free for up to six months while they re-establish their financial security.
During their time in the program, the families work with social workers, career counselors and attend life skills workshops weekly, all of which contribute toward the success of the families in the program. And it is effective, it would seem, as 77 percent of families that have gone through the program go on to stable housing.
"To me, it's an amazing thing that these people do," Pye said of the people and groups who make the Ice Cream Crankin' possible, "it makes this event completely unique."
