JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The summer after high school graduation is usually filled with relaxation before going off to college or entering the job market. For one Johns Creek High School senior, summer will be filled with training and fundraising.

Curran Brown, 18, was chosen to represent the U.S. in the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports World Junior Games in Puerto Rico in August. She now has the task to raise $2,300 to attend the games.

Brown, whose sports are wheelchair basketball, shot put, javelin and discus, has been interested in athletics since she was young.

"When I first got into a wheelchair when I was 6, I came across an organization called Blaze Sports of America. It is a nonprofit organization for kids with disabilities and it helps them get involved in all different kinds of sports," Brown said. "From then on, I've been involved."

Brown decided since she was interested in track and field, she should try out for nationals. She went to try outs and met with the woman in charge. She told Brown to fill out a form and if her distance and time were good enough, she'd make the team.

"So I did it and I made it," Brown said.

Her selection to be one of 30 people from the U.S. to go to the junior world games has given Brown the motivation to reach her highest potential.

"This year, I've been training. I joined my high school track team and I've been working with them every day since January after I found out I made the team. I like being active and getting involved in all kinds of sports," Brown said. "I've also been traveling the USA competing and seeing my competition and what I need to work toward to get where I want to be."

Since she found out the cost of the trip to attend the games, Brown has already managed to raise $800 from donations from family, friends and sponsors.
